Temporomandibular joints is a synovial joint (Hinge and gliding joint) that connect the body’s skull and jawbone and permit the movement while talking, chewing, and swallowing. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction can cause pain in the ear, neck, jaw while talking and eating. It leads to production clicking and popping sounds when the jaw moves. Condyle refers to the round movable lower jaw fitted in a fixed socket called the articular fossa.

Goldfish exercise- The exercise is carried out by placing the index finger of the left hand on the chin and the index finger of the right hand in front of the ear. The person is then asked to drop his jaw halfway and push it upwards again through resistance.

Tongue movement- In this exercise, the individual is advised to open and close their mouth at regular intervals by keeping the tongue attached to the floor of the mouth.

The person is asked to close his mouth with maxilla and mandible touching each other. The person is asked to touch the tip of his tongue to the soft palate by moving it backward and opening the mouth simultaneously. It is advised to keep the tongue in that position for 10 seconds. By this exercise, the person can sense pressure in the neck and under the chin that helps in strengthening the jaw. 

Using an object such as a tongue depressor in front of the teeth, the people are asked to move the bottom jaw regularly. As the person gets acquainted with the exercise, the thickness of the object used is increased. 

One of the Temporomandibular joint dysfunction relaxation techniques involves closing and opening the mouth by applying pressure. The person is used to placing the index finger and thumb on his chin and applying pressure to close the mouth. This exercise is done for 5-10 mins to strengthen the masseter, temporalis, and pterygoid.

If a person is suffering from pain and irritation in Temporomandibular joints, massaging the muscles, head, and jaw using a little oil is recommended. Individuals should avoid food items that are too hard to chew and use hot and cold packs to relieve the pain.
