Ashtanga yoga is known for its many benefits. In Sanskrit, the word ‘Asht’ means eight and ‘ang’ means limb or organ. Thus, it is the yoga of eight limb or organs. It is useful to lead a disciplined life and to achieve self-realization. There are many yoga sutras. These sutras are methods to walk on the path a self-satisfaction. By following yoga practices, one can purify the mind and soul of self and be with the universe. Here is the full list of the eight limbs of these yoga practices.

Yama Of Ashtanga Yoga:

 It is the first one of the eight limbs of the Ashtanga Yoga. Yama deals with the moral code of the human. It forces us to avoid 5 things. These 5 things restrain us from the spiritual path. Let’s check out them.

  • Ahimsa: Harmlessness or nonviolence. One must not harm others willingly.
  • Satya: Truthfulness or non-lying. You should always tell the truth and not care about others.
  • Asteya: On shouldn’t be greedy about something that he doesn’t have.
  • Brahmacharya: One should learn to control his sexual desires. Controlling sexual passion will give great physical stamina. Mental power will also increase. This energy can be used in other aspects of life.
  • Aparigraha: Not to be possessive about anything. Possessiveness to a matter can ruin a life.

Niyama Of Ashtanga Yoga:

Niyama is the second one of this yoga practice. It helps to purify the self. There are 5 niyamas one should follow.

  • Sauca: It helps to purify one’s mind and body.
  • Santosa: It helps to accept others without thinking about their flaws.
  • Tapas: It is the practice of self-discipline.
  • Svdhyaya: It is the study of self.
  • Tsvarapranidhana: Being with the unchanging reality.

Asana Of Ashtanga Yoga:

One should be able to sit with a straight spine without moving. The practice should be done for a long period of time.

Pranayama:

Pranayama is the best breathing exercise techniques. It teaches one to control our breathing and raising the consciousness of the body. It is the technique of controlling the energy of the body.

Pratyahara:

It deals with the impute of someone’s thoughts and attention.

Dharana:

One should always have a one-pointed focus on life. It helps us concentrate on self-realization.

Samadhi Of Ashtanga Yoga:

Samadhi helps one to completely accept the universe. It makes us “one” in the infinity. There are two stages of samadhi.

  • Subikalpa: It is the temporary samadhi of the body. It is conditional.
  • Nirbikalpa: It is the permanent samadhi of the body. It is unconditional.

There are six enemies (Shoro Ripu) in a human heart. Kama (Desire), Krodha (Anger), Lobha (Greed), Mod (Envy), Moha (Delusion) and Matsarya (Sloth). Practicing this ashtanga yoga in our daily life to attain our highest soul potential. The yoga practice brings the body parts together. It creates harmony between the body and the mind. We shouldn’t see Ashtanga yoga as a practice method. But to live in it. And breathe it in life. Te practice allows us to grow our own peace.
